Croydon A&E overhaul continues despite pandemic

A&E lead and reporting radiographer Sarah Landeg reports that not even the COVID-19 pandemic could stop the long-awaited re-development of Croydon University Hospital’s A&E x-ray service.

Phase one of building works began in March just before the hospital started to receive COVID-19 cases. Works continued throughout the peak of the pandemic and staff began using the new Samsung GC85 room, supplied by MIS Healthcare, in June. This coincided with the number of patients attending the A&E department returning to near normal levels, so there was plenty of opportunity to make sure that all staff were trained.

“Samsung equipment was selected due to the variety of automated functions and light movement. It streamlines working in this busy environment while minimising manual handling,” Landeg explained. “It has a user-friendly interface and versatile set-up, which is changing the way we image trauma patients.”

Phase two to redevelop the viewing area and install another GC85 into the other A&E x-ray room begins this month. “It will be such a pleasure to work in this new environment with equipment that helps radiographers to continually get optimal images with minimal discomfort for trauma patients,” she added.
