Leicester trust gains valuable training with phantom

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has received a Kyoto Kagaku PBU-60 CT whole body phantom from MediScientific.  In order to overcome current financial pressures, different departments in the trust grouped together to produce a joint bid for funds.  Funding came partly from research income and partly from Leicester Hospitals’ charity.

The phantom has been nicknamed Jeremy and Leicester Royal Infirmary radiology site manager Colin Ross explained: “Jeremy will allow us to develop new techniques more quickly and without risk to patients.  For example, it will improve our ability to develop protocols for high resolution, low dose CT scans to explore novel treatments in asthma, bringing new options to patients in Leicester.  We will be able to optimise our protocols to ensure we can get better images with lower radiation dose as well as better testing and calibration of our scanners.”
