It is approaching 17 years since the establishment of the first consultant radiographer post in radiotherapy. From a policy context, the initial drivers for radiographer role development included recognition that 80% of practice within a radiotherapy department could be managed by appropriately skilled non-medical advanced and consultant practitioners. The aim was to eliminate unacceptable waiting times for cancer treatment and in so doing, improve access and quality of care. These were central tenets to the success of the consultant radiographer role in oncology and we now see more than 30 consultant posts across the UK.
